The 4 Main Causes
- Completely clogged air filters: This is the number one cause. If the indoor filters are covered with a thick layer of dust, the cold air cannot pass through the grilles. The immediate solution is to remove them and wash them under running water.
- Lack of refrigerant gas: Attention, the gas in an air conditioner does not "run out" like fuel in a car! If the gas is missing, it means there is a micro-leak in the pipes or fittings. Simply recharging the gas without first finding and sealing the leak (using nitrogen) is a useless waste of money.
- Dirty or obstructed outdoor unit: The outdoor motor is tasked with expelling the heat absorbed in the house. If the fan or the outdoor coil is blocked by leaves, dust, pollen, or debris, the system goes into thermal lockout to protect itself and stops cooling.
- Capacitor or compressor failure: If you hear an abnormal buzzing coming from the outdoor unit but the fan is not turning, the start capacitor may have burned out. It is an electrical part easily replaceable by a technician. If the failure involves the compressor (the heart of the motor), the intervention will be more complex.
